This site represents a project to build and critique (through its making) a data-based (and AI-powered) exploration of painting / knowledge. It is comprised of:

Knowledge Base

Project Space

Study Materials

The Knowledge Base invites submissions of research and project materials, with the view to building a contemporary, large dataset pertaining to the critical examination of painting. The Project Space (under construction) sets to take advantage of a range of AI image and text generation tools to assist in the creation of new knowledge (to build upon and be trained by the Knowledge Base). A set of Study Materials offer resource for educators and students to devise and work through a course of key reading, bringing together a set of critical and primary sources.

The site makes deliberate, performative use of Notion, a collaboration platform integrating boards, tasks, wikis and databases for team-based knowledge, data and project management.

Typically used to build to-do lists, track projects, and curate shared documents, Notion is a versatile website builder and team management software, which is characteristic for its approach to nest user-generated databases. Painting / Knowledge takes advantage of the platform’s ability to both construct databases and to build
